Bar coding patient wristbands is the first step to using Automatic Identification and Data Collection (AIDC) solutions to enhance patient safety and reduce medical errors. Once the patient is uniquely identified with a machine readable code, positive patient identification for safety, billing and security are easily implemented. This makes bar coding wristbands a great first project to get the facility and its employees using bar code technology. Admitting patients with a mobile device adds flexibility and is easily scalable to ambulances and applications outside of the healthcare facility.

Solution
Caregivers can use a mobile device to admit patients anywhere within a hospital’s network. The caregiver simply clicks the “Admit Patient” button and enters the patient information in response to the prompts. Pressing the enter button prints an ID bracelet for the patient and also updates the admittance database. Because of the underlying technology involved (TEKLYNX IDEAM) this application can easily be run outside of the four walls of the healthcare facility using a Windows Mobile powered GPRS device (cell phone).
