Microscan MS-5000 Multidrop
Concentrator
Microscans series 5000 multidrop concentrator polls and collects
data over an RS-485 multidrop network from up to 50 devices, including
scanners, decoders, or bar-code label printers. Several concentrators
can also be cascaded to poll more than 50 devices. The series 5000 makes
it simple to integrate a network of Microscan bar-code scanning
equipment with a host computer.
High-speed communication up to 38.4K baud over the multidrop network and
with the host computer.
Direct, continual polling of the device network, using standard RS-485
multidrop protocols or polling mode D.
Simple integration with the host computer through easy-to-set, built-in
software menus for RS-232C, RS-422, and RS-485 interfaces with standard
and user-defined protocols.
Direct terminal hookup through auxiliary port for convenient access to
configuration menus and current status of devices on the network.

RS-422
Default: RS232
Options: RS232, RS422
Used only in Point-to-point protocol, and not with RTS or CTS. RS422 is
not used with Aux Port. When RS422 is disabled, RS232 is enabled. An
exception to this is that whenever Multidrop or User Defined Multidrop
is selected, the functioning standard is RS485 regardless of the
displayed status of RS422 in the menus.
Aux mode
Default: enabled
Options: enabled, disabled
(Aux port only)
Used only when connected to the Aux Port (labeled "MONITOR" on the
concentrator). Aux Mode can be used for menu configuration, device
status monitoring, and for displaying host messages.
Turnaround timeout
Default: 15ms for Host Port and
12ms for LAN Port
Options: 1 to 250ms
The time that the concentrator will wait between its request for data
and a device's response in a poll or select sequence.
At the Host port: the time the
concentrator will wait for a response from the host when communicating
with the host in Multidrop or User Defined Multidrop
At the LAN port: the time the
concentrator will wait for a response from a LAN device when
communicating with that device in Multidrop or User Defined Multidrop.
Note: turnaround timeout for the LAN Port in the host unit
should be set for a longer period of time than it will take the
concentrator to poll and receive the longest anticipated data string
from the decoders it is polling.
Intercharacter timeout
Default: 15ms
Options: 1 to 250ms
Intercharacter Timeout (used only with Host Port) is the concentrator's
waiting period between individual characters transmitted from the host.
Poll response timeout
Default: 15ms
Options: 1 to 250ms
(Host Port only)
Used only if the concentrator is in polled mode to its host. It is used
to determine if too much time has lapsed since the poll came in from the
host for it to safely answer the host's poll. It should be set to about
5 ms less than the turnaround timeout set in the host's LAN Port. This
will ensure that if a response is made by the polled device, the host
has not abandoned the device, and gone on to another device.
Note: Poll response timeout for the concentrator should be
set to about 5ms less than the turnaround timeout set in the host's LAN
setup. For example, if the longest data string coming from any decoder
is 40 characters, set the host's LAN Port turnaround timeout to 50ms and
Poll Response Timeout for the concentrator to 45ms.
Number of Devices
Default: 1
Options: 1 to 50
(LAN Port only)
Number of devices allows you to reduce the number of addresses polled by
the concentrator from fifty to as a few as one (use the number of the
last address you want polled). For example, if you know that the
concentrator will have only six devices on the LAN, you can speed up
polling by setting Number of Devices to six. Thus, the concentrator will
not waste the time set for Turnaround Timeout by trying to poll
nonexistence devices. The range is 1 to 50 devices.
Note: You cannot assign an address that exceeds the value
used for Number of Devices.
