PSC Falcon 315 Portable Data
Terminal
The
PSC Falcon
315 is PSC's entry-level DOS-based wireless portable data terminal,
featuring an 8-line graphics display and choice of 2.4 GHz radios. The
Falcon 315 utilizes an integrated, PC-compatible, 32-bit 386
microprocessor, with programmable speeds from 1MHz to 25MHz. It features
industry-standard DOS 6.22 operating system, which eliminates the need
to learn proprietary programming languages and allows easy use of
favorite development tools. The PSC Falcon 315 provides the same
flexibility, ease of use, durability, and ergonomic comfort as the
Falcon batch model (Falcon
310), but it includes a 2.4 GHz frequency-hopping
spread-spectrum wireless LAN adapter in its user-accessible PC card slot
and an external, flexible dipole antenna. The PSC Falcon 315 is
well-suited for demanding, real-time data-collection applications.
Open-Architecture
Design
The PSC Falcon 315 utilizes an integrated, PC-compatible, 32-bit 386
microprocessor, with programmable speeds up to 25 MHz. It features the
latest, industry-standard DOS 6.22 operating system, eliminating the
need for proprietary programming languages and allowing for the use of
standard programming tools.
Choice of
2.4GHz Radio Solutions
Only the PSC Falcon 315 gives you a choice of 2.4GHz frequency-hopping
spread-spectrum wireless LAN PC cards and access points, including the
Spectrum24 from Symbol Technologies, Inc, and RangeLAN2 from Proxim,
Inc. PSC may offer additional radio solutions in the future. Both of the
Spectrum24 and RangeLAN2 radios provide long-range mobility, high
throughput and network capacity, advanced power management, and seamless
roaming among multiple cells. The 2.4GHz radios are fully certified by
the FCC and ETSI and are being approved for use throughout the world,
without the need for an end-user license.
Long-Range
Mobility
Both the Spectrum24 and RangeLAN2 radios provide an indoor range of up
to 500 feet and an outdoor range of up to 1000 feet. Of course, the
actual range you will achieve depends on many factors. A site survey
should be conducted to determine the number and placement of access
points to provide the required coverage.
High
Throughput and Network Capacity
Both the Spectrum24 and RangeLAN2 radio options offer high throughput
and network capacity. Spectrum24 runs at 1.0Mbps, and RangeLAN2 runs at
1.6MBps.
Both radios
support multiple, independent, non-interfering virtual channels (hopping
patterns), permitting increased total network capacity through the use
of multiple access points.
Advanced
Power Management
Both the Spectrum24 and RangeLAN2 radio options offer advanced power
management, enabling full-shift operation (8+ hours) on a single charge
in most applications. With power management enabled, Falcon 315
conserves power by suspending communication while the associated access
point saves data for it. At given intervals, Falcon 315 wakes up and
checks for messages from the access point.
Seamless
Roaming
PSC
Falcon 315 enables the mobile user to roam freely throughout a facility
while maintaining a continuous, seamless connection to the wired
network. This is accomplished using multiple access points, each
operating on a unique virtual channel.
Ethernet
Access Points
PSC
Falcon 315 is available with Spectrum24 and RangeLAN2 access points,
which provide transparent wireless access to Ethernet-wired networks.
PSC Falcon 315 access points are configurable with software over the wired
network or via a serial link. Models are available that incorporate an SNMP agent, enabling management from a single point regardless of the
location. In addition, SNMP traps notify the network manager when
various conditions occur on the access point. All models support
advanced diagnostics for isolating problems. Access points are available
with a variety of antenna options and mounting brackets.
Falcon
Dock
Designed specifically for use with Falcon portable data terminals, you
can use the Falcon Dock to recharge the unit's NiCad or NiMH battery
pack. Your Falcon 315 portable data terminal will be fully charged and
ready to scan in 8 to 15 hours.
Network
Software
Documentation kits available with PSC Falcon 315 include network interface
card drivers, transport protocol stacks, network shells, site-survey
tools, and sample configuration files. NDIS, ODI, and packet drivers,
TCP/IP and SPX/IPX transport protocols, and Novell's NETX and VLM
network shells are provided. Site-survey tools allow you to use Falcon
315 to position access points optimally and validate communication from
all required points in an installation. Sample configuration files
enable Falcon 315 to be used with TCP/IP, SPX/IPX, NetBEUI, and
Workgroups Connection for DOS.
