PTC-2234 Pen-Based Computer

Versatile and convenient computing for hazardous locations
There are few hand-held mobile computers that are rated for deployment in hazardous locations, and of those that are, the majority are key-based. The PTC 2234 is a pen-based mobile computer that is approved for use with a Non-Incendive rating for hazardous locations. An extension of the PTC 2134 Series of pen-based terminals, the PTC 2234 combines mobile data collection and wireless connectivity with PC technology for use in hazardous locations.

While many companies ask for intrinsically safe equipment, typically, Non-Incendive equipment meets their operational needs - and business model. The PTC 2234 Non-Incendive is designed for use in areas that are generally classified as those where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapors, or liquids are not likely to exist under normal operating conditions. For instance, in environments where volatile, flammable liquids or flammable gases or vapors exist, but are normally confined within closed containers, a Non-Incendive rated device such as the PTC 2234 is likely to be the most efficient solution.

The PTC 2234 offers an integrated 1-D scanner and an RF-ID system. The SRM RF-ID system emits low-level radio frequency energy at 134.2 KHz and receives signals for TIRIS transponders in the same frequency range. The device transponder resides in the internal PC Card bay and offers read/write capabilities up to 5" (12.7cm). The built-in antenna also serves as a convenient handle.

Like the PTC 2134, the PTC 2234 is powered by an SC400 100 MHz microprocessor, which offers robust processing and very low power consumption. With up to 54 MB DRAM the PTC 2234 empowers users to manage data quickly and efficiently. Based on the open system architecture of Windows 95, the PTC 2234 uses industry-standard hardware and software, thereby providing the user with a powerful system that is easily customized to specific business and operational needs.

Specially contoured, the PTC 2234 was designed with the mobile user in mind. Its weight is evenly distributed to ensure safe, comfortable deployment for any type of user. Its 6" (15.1cm) diagonal full-VGA touch-screen is optimized for stylus input and offers block letter character recognition and signature capture capability. The monochrome transflective LCD display offers 640 x 480 pixel resolution, 64 shades of gray and a CCFL backlight.

PTC 2234 is available with either direct sequencing or frequency hopping wireless local area network connectivity. These IEEE 802.11-compliant radio options are designed for primary communications with host devices and provide a high degree of immunity to radio noise and interference.

With RF-ID capability, premium processing power and full VGA display, the PTC 2234 is a dynamic tool with unique capabilities. In addition, the Non-Incendive rating enables it to perform where many pen-based terminals cannot.
